Temperatures skyrocketed to record-breaking levels today, for the second time in a row. The previous record of 94 degrees fell around 2 p.m. Temperatures felt even hotter with many locations feeling well into the 100-111 degree range for the afternoon hours.
The extreme heat warning will be up until 8 p.m. tonight for much of the region. An air quality alert is also up until 11 p.m. for Rockland and Westchester counties due to elevated ground-level ozone that makes it difficult to breathe if you have breathing issues like asthma.
Wednesday is the last day of this extreme heat, with temperatures being a touch cooler than Tuesday. A heat advisory is in effect for all of the Hudson Valley except western Ulster County. This alert is up until 7 p.m. Wednesday. Temperatures could feel as hot as 102 degrees.
If White Plains gets above 90 degrees on Wednesday, the Hudson Valley would officially be in a heat wave. The forecast high is 94, so not only would we see a new record high (the current record is 92), but we would also see our first official heat wave of the season.
There will be mostly sunny skies through the day with a chance of afternoon showers and storms popping up. A cold front will be pushing through the region throughout the day and will help to fire up that precipitation chance. Even though the chance for showers and storms is low, the chance of sweeping away the heat will be high.
Temperatures will drop around 20 degrees from Wednesday to Thursday, making it much more bearable to be outside. There will also be a higher chance of showers and storms popping up. The wet weather trend will continue Friday and into Saturday as a system moves through the area. But the precipitation chances go back down as we head into Sunday.
