Police in New Rochelle are investigating after a dog's body was found in a garbage bag.
The discovery was made Thursday evening near Glenwood Lake and Gloucester Place.
Police say the body of a large, brown pit bull was found in a torn contractor-style garbage bag on the roadside.
Several wounds were found on the dog that did not appear consistent with the early stages of decomposition, according to police.
Police were alerted to the incident by residents.
"My dad came back from a walk yesterday and said 'somebody has opened the bag' and he saw the dog," one neighbor tells News 12.
Officials are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the dog’s death
Regardless of how it happened, people in the neighborhood say it's upsetting.
"It's definitely a dog-friendly community so that's just a strange thing to find," says New Rochelle resident Jordan Battiste.
The New Rochelle Police Department is seeking information from the public to assist in this investigation.
