JetBlue is increasing checked bag fees for the second time this year, a move the airline says is tied to higher jet fuel prices.
The increase is expected to make travel more expensive, especially as travelers head into the busy holiday season.
For tickets purchased on or after Nov. 3, passengers will pay at least $50 each way for a first checked bag, up from $39.
Bag fees will be even higher during peak travel periods, including Thanksgiving and the winter holidays.
Travelers who pay for their checked bag at least 24 hours before their flight will pay $55 during those peak periods. Those who wait until the final 24 hours before departure will pay $60 during off-peak travel times and $70 during peak travel periods.
Fees for a second checked bag have also increased. Travelers will pay at least $70 each way during off-peak periods and $75 during peak travel times.
The higher fees are causing concern among some travelers as they prepare for holiday trips.
JetBlue sent News 12 a statement saying the encourage customers to add their checked bags at least 24 hours before their flight.
"JetBlue Plus, JetBlue Business and JetBlue Premier Cardmembers will continue to receive their first checked bag free for the primary Cardmember and up to three travel companions when using their card to book JetBlue flights," the spokesperson for JetBlue said. "TrueBlue Mosaic members will also continue to enjoy one free checked bag for Mosaic 1, and two free checked bags for Mosaic 2, 3 and 4."
News 12 has reached out to other airlines that operate out of MacArthur Airport to find out whether they are making similar changes. Updates will be provided when those airlines respond.
