Residents in Mamaroneck gathered Sunday at American Legion Post 90 to recognize the true meaning of Memorial Day, reflecting on the sacrifices made by those who served and never returned home.
Community members came together in remembrance of fallen service members and their enduring legacy. Leading the event was Vietnam veteran Chester Edwards, who served as both keynote speaker and master of ceremonies.
Edwards emphasized that while many Americans spend the holiday weekend enjoying time with family and friends, it’s important to pause and reflect on the price paid for those freedoms. He urged attendees to carry that sense of remembrance beyond a single day, encouraging people to honor veterans whenever they encounter memorials, places of worship, or moments of quiet reflection.
The ceremony also underscored the global impact of military service. One attendee, Alfred Che, spoke about his hometown of Kunming, China, where American-led forces known as the Flying Tigers played a key role during World War II. He expressed gratitude for their efforts, noting how their presence helped protect the region during a time of conflict.
As communities across Westchester mark Memorial Day, ceremonies like this one in Mamaroneck are a reminder that honoring those who served is not just a tradition, but an ongoing responsibility.
