A beloved rescue who became the City of Newburgh’s firedog died this week after battling cancer.
Nick the firedog was found by City of Newburgh firefighters in 2016. He was abandoned and tied to a fire hydrant. Department members felt the way he was found was more than a coincidence and adopted him to replace their previous firedog, Barney.
Nick quickly became a fixture at the department and community events, and News 12 previously reported on him when one of the firefighters wrote a book about him. He became a TikTok sensation.
The dog and his handler, Chris O’Dell, retired in 2023 but Nick often returned to the department to keep his former two-legged colleagues' company.
News 12 is told even in his final days and despite feeling unwell, Nick always had his tail wagging.
