Spotify announced on Tuesday that it will begin labeling AI-generated artist personas starting mid-September.
The company says the feature was created in response to user reports expressing disappointment about discovering seemingly human artists are inauthentic.
To combat the issue, Spotify is introducing the “AI Persona” badge. The icon will appear on artist profile pages, in the search tab and next to names on playlists.
By clicking the badge, users will be able to see whether the artist disclosed the AI-generated persona or if Spotify had to independently review and label them.
Spotify says they will not include AI Personas in editorial features. The personas will also not appear in personalized algorithmic recommendations unless the user is already a follower.
Users will also have the ability to report profiles they believe are AI-generated in the coming months, according to the company.
Spotify says the feature is part of a wider effort to build transparency on the platform.
“Listeners need to be able to trust that the artist behind the music is who they say they are,” the company said in a release. “We know the music ecosystem is evolving, and so will our approach. We’ll continue to adapt as the landscape changes and as we learn from artists, listeners, and industry partners.”
