Lucas Canniff, who requires a chairlift to enter and exit his house, has been depending on his family for the past two weeks after his "Handi-Lift" chairlift broke down. Now, his mother is demanding answers.
Lucas Canniff was only 11 months old when he sustained a spontaneous hematoma in his spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed.
Now at 10 years old, Lucas has relied on his "Handi-Lift" chairlift for the past three years to safely bring him up 14 steps from the base floor of his home to his first floor.
Around two weeks ago the machine broke, leaving him unable to travel the staircase safely alone.
"It just helps me be independent, which I usually am...but without that...I can't," he says.
With the chairlift out of commission, Lucas and his wheelchair have to be carried up and down the stairs.
Lucas' mother, Lisa Canniff, says Handi-Lift, canceled their appointment to fix the lift with no stated reason.
Shortly after, she says she was notified that a piece needed to be shipped to repair the machine.
"Currently, we are told that there whatever part needed to be ordered...we're not really sure what that part is...has shipped and we're on the books for Friday for an appointment, but again, we haven't we haven't talked to anybody but the person that schedules the appointments, so beyond that, we don't really have any information," said Lucas' mother, Lisa Canniff.
"It's upsetting for Luke because he's used to be independent," she added, "obviously, we're managing, but it makes life a little more stressful."
News 12 contacted Handi-Lift for a response and was told the company is working to get an update on the part from the manufacturer.
