Families across the Hudson Valley could soon see new and improved places for kids to play as $15.5 million in state funding heads to playground projects throughout the Mid-Hudson region.

The funding is part of New York’s NY PLAYS initiative, which is providing $67.5 million for 89 playground projects statewide.

In Newburgh, the city was awarded $2 million to renovate the playground at Delano-Hitch Recreation Park, next to the recently opened Aquatic Center.

A rendering released by the city shows the vision for the new playground. Plans include areas for toddlers and elementary-aged children, swings, a sensory trail, a music area with chimes and drums and a central gathering lawn. The city says the playground will also include ADA-accessible amenities and features designed for children with autism or sensory-processing differences.

Ellenville is receiving nearly $500,000 for improvements to the playground at Berme Road Park and has also released a rendering of its planned project. Other local awards include nearly $930,000 to expand the playground at Benedict Farm Park in Montgomery and $2.5 million for a playground project at Camp LaGuardia County Park in Orange County.

Statewide, the funding will support a mix of new playgrounds, expansions and renovations aimed at creating more accessible outdoor recreation spaces for children and families.
