A tentative labor agreement has been reached between residential building workers and the Building and Realty Institute, averting the possibility of a strike as the current contract nears its Sept. 30 expiration.

Workers, including doorpersons, porters, superintendents, residential managers and handypersons, gathered in Rye Monday evening as the contract deadline approached. Officials said a tentative deal had been reached by 6:30 p.m.

According to labor union 32BJ, the proposed four-year contract covers 1,300 workers across the Hudson Valley. The union says the agreement includes its highest-ever wage increases, pension improvements and the maintenance of health care benefits.

A member of the bargaining committee said the agreement honors the efforts of previous generations while helping ensure future generations can benefit from union jobs.

The chair of the Building and Realty Institute's labor negotiations committee said the goal was to reach a sustainable contract that takes economic hardships on all sides into account.

The agreement still needs to be ratified by union members in the coming weeks. If approved, the new contract will run through Sept. 30, 2030.
