A 99-year-old World War II Navy veteran received an award from Dominican University in Orangeburg during an international history conference on the global conflict this week.
Arthur Grabiner, from Queens, joined the Navy at 18 and served in the Pacific aboard the USS Laurens, participating in the Invasion of Lingayen Gulf and the Battle of Okinawa, officials said.
"Was a young fellow, coming out of school, knowing nothing, and in a short period of time, the world was taught to me," Grabiner said.
This year marks 80 years since the end of World War II.
