A collapsed sewer basin on Interstate 80 in Morris County caused delays for the Tuesday morning rush.
The hole formed in Rockaway Township near Exit 37 on Monday evening on the eastbound side of the highway, closing several lanes. Those lanes appeared to be reopened Tuesday evening.
The cause of the basin collapse was not immediately made available.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation clarified that this particular incident was not a sinkhole.
I-80 has been plagued by ongoing closures and repairs in nearby Wharton due to at least three sinkholes that have developed since December 2024.
A portion of the highway in Wharton is expected to reopen by the end of May. The DOT says it expects all repairs to be completed sometime in June.
