Police across Orange County are investigating a string of overnight business burglaries and attempted break-ins that happened within about a one-hour span just miles from each other early Tuesday morning.
Officials say the incidents happened at businesses in Warwick, Florida and Goshen.
According to Goshen Town Police Chief James Post, multiple businesses were hit overnight and a vehicle was also stolen during the spree. Warwick police confirmed three incidents connected to the investigation.
The first reported break-in happened around 4:11 a.m. at Wine Time Liquor Store on Route 94 North in Warwick.
According to Warwick Police Chief John Rader, suspects smashed the front glass door, made it inside briefly and stole money from the register before taking off.
Wine Time representative Mark Chisholm showed News 12 surveillance video that appears to show suspects smashing the glass front door, reaching inside to unlock the entrance and trying to pull out the cash register before fleeing with merchandise.
“We’ve never once had to look at the camera for any reason,” Chisholm said. “I didn’t even know the password. When you see one, two, three, four burglars, it hurts. It does. It hits you."
About a half-hour later, the Kwik Mart on Farries Avenue in the Village of Florida was also hit, according to the store owner.
The owner says four masked suspects smashed through the front door and tore through the store, stealing merchandise and trying to take the cash register before employees arrived for the morning.
“When I came here, I saw the glasses was all smashed. The door was half open,” the owner told News 12. “I came in and saw all of the stuff on the floor. The register was just hanging from the counter.”
Surveillance video shared with News 12 shows the suspects grabbing tobacco products off shelves and ripping merchandise from racks. One suspect was seen jumping over the counter to grab additional items behind the register.
“It gives you a very strong feeling of being unsafe, which is terrible,” the owner said. “Feeling of being unsafe and insecure is really terrible. Something should be done to stop all these things."
Then, just before 5 a.m., suspects targeted the Mobil gas station and mini mart on Route 17A in Goshen.
The store clerk tells News 12 that suspects shattered the front glass door only minutes before he arrived to open the business, but never made it inside. He says the metal security bars installed on the door appear to have stopped the suspects from getting through.
The clerk shared a photo with News 12 showing a suspect at the damaged doorway, while News 12 captured video on Wednesday of the entrance boarded up with plywood following the attempted break-in.
Police say the incidents remain under investigation and no arrests have been made.
