The town of Mount Pleasant has new regulations governing the use of e-bikes and e-scooters.
"We get a lot of complaints from the public that kids are driving erratically with the scooters and e-bikes on the roads. That it's a safety hazard. Everyone echoes the same message. They say that 'We're concerned that someone is really going to get seriously injured or killed,'" said Town of Mount Pleasant Police Chief Paul Oliva.
The new law establishes operating guidelines and age restrictions.
"The law at this point is similar to New York state law. Right now, you are prohibited from operating unless you're 16 years or older," Chief Oliva explained.
Town officials told News 12 that the new rules are about keeping everyone safe.
“We are seeking to protect children and pedestrians while allowing adults to ride these devices responsibly," said Mount Pleasant Town Supervisor Carl Fulgenzi.
Residents said they've noticed the problem increase over the last year or so.
"The 12-year-olds, the 13-year-olds are zipping back and forth and I can't," said Erika Martin, who lives in Mount Pleasant.
Some others said they don't mind younger teens using the e-bikes, as long as they're safe.
"In terms of, like, if kids are trying to go to school or a part-time job, it can be great for them," said Denis, who lives in Westchester County.
