The owners of two Medicaid transportation companies in Orange County have been sentenced for stealing millions as part of a fraud scheme, the Orange County district attorney and State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli announced Tuesday.
Rohail Raja, of New Windsor, will spend six to 18 years in prison. His wife Sharma Alam, also a co-owner, was sentenced to six months.
Authorities say the pair stole over $3 million from the New York State Health Department by fraudulently billing for Medicaid transports that did not occur or did not happen the way it was indicated.
As part of their guilty plea, the couple was ordered to pay back the money they stole.
