A woman has pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges after authorities say she abandoned a severely injured dog at a Yonkers cemetery.
Prosecutors say Anita Martin pleaded guilty to Overdriving, Torturing, and Injuring Animals and Failure to Provide Proper Sustenance and Abandonment of Animals.
Investigators say Martin left a 1-year-old mastiff mix named Frankie tied to a gate at Saint John's Cemetery in Yonkers on Nov. 21.
According to court documents, Frankie was left without food or water for more than three hours before a good Samaritan found him and called police.
A veterinarian later determined Frankie had a severe neck wound measuring 22 centimeters long and 4 centimeters deep. The injury exposed underlying tissue, was badly infected and required a two-hour surgery. The dog was also found to be severely underweight and emaciated, with visible ribs indicating he had not received proper nutrition for an extended period.
Despite his injuries, the veterinarian described Frankie as "remarkably sweet and loving."
Martin is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 13, 2027. She is expected to receive three years of probation, complete 20 hours of community service, pay $1,618.50 in restitution and register with the Animal Abuse Registry.
