A yearslong revitalization effort in West Nyack is now officially complete, bringing an end to extensive construction and marking a new chapter for the hamlet.
Just a year and a half ago, much of West Nyack was a construction zone. Today, the work is finished, and residents say they are already enjoying the improvements.
"It's just a pleasure to come down here. We love it," said Lenore, a West Nyack resident.
"It's a nice little town to walk around now. We're enjoying it a lot," added Marie, another West Nyack resident.
Businesses experiencing the lunchtime rush say they are pleased with how the area now looks, joining longtime residents, workers and community leaders in celebrating the project's completion.
"They say all good things come to those who wait. Well, West Nyack waited and we ended up with a fantastic project," said Maddy Muller, the vice president of Heritage of West Nyack Civic Association.
The revitalization was said to have been first discussed and proposed nearly two decades ago and spanned the administrations of three Clarkstown supervisors.
A plaque unveiled Thursday marks both the end of the project and what officials describe as a new beginning for the area.
"We have completed that mission. The job is done. And I think it'll be a credit to the people and West Nyack for the next 100 years," said Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann.
The transformation took place in multiple phases and included flood mitigation improvements, a new park, enhanced traffic flow and additional parking along West Nyack Road.
Officials said the project's final phase cost approximately $11 million, with several million dollars coming from federal and state funding sources.
Clarkstown officials also said completion of the project was delayed because of necessary work performed by utility companies.
